AboutAbout Charismatic Pentecostalism Pentecostalism is a branch of Protestant Christianity recently formed. There is a traditional type of Pentecostalism and there is a less strict type called the Charismatic Movement, which is mainly what this project is about. It started with churches grouping together in belief of the physical representation of the Holy Spirit. It's known for speaking in tongues, and their close following of the New Testament.
Holy Texts |
The Bible is the holy text of Pentecostalism. It was written in two parts, the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and contains Hebrew scriptures. The New Testament (more closely followed by Pentecostals) was originally written in Greek and contains the writings of Jesus Christ's apostles and their ideas of the early church. The New Testament contains multiple books and has been translated for modern day use.
Some of the important beliefs of Pentecostalism are baptism with the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues and the belief that people don't need a formal church structure to have a personal relationship with God. Baptism with the Holy Spirit is done by completely submerging the person by the pastor. It was similar to John the Baptist who baptized early Christians in the Jordan River. Speaking in tongues is when a person reaches a spiritual peak and speaks incomprehensibly to anyone else listening. They believe that the words were given to them by God. Finally, the Charismatic movement emphasizes a personal relationship between the follower and God and doesn't require a formal church structure such as attending church and confession to be a Christian. The only requirement is the desire to become born again in Christ.
Pentecostalism is a monotheistic religion, meaning they believe in one God. Pentecostals worship God and anything else is considered to be worshiping an idol and that is forbidden.
Pentecostals believe in the after life and that if you are a believer in Jesus and God you will go to heaven. But if you have sinned and not asked for forgiveness you are destined for misery in hell. They use this as pressure to make decisions for everyday life, people should live as if Jesus was walking right next to them.
